YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy

Our History

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy was founded in 1921 with an original building constructed at the corner of Lake Avenue and High Street in Metuchen. The funding for this facility was provided in the bequest of Charles Edgar, whose company Edgar Clay and Mineral was a leading corporation in both New Jersey and Georgia during this period.
Over the years the Y has changed and grown, but remains true to its original mission: Dedication to building strong kids, strong families and strong communities through programs that develop values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. The YMCA serves all people, regardless of age, religion, sex or financial means and is committed to helping all people develop a healthy spirit, mind and body. The warmth and support envisioned by Mr. Edgar in founding the Y remains alive today.

We have expanded from our first full-facility branch in Metuchen, to 3 additional branches located in Woodbridge, Edison and South Amboy respectively.

Today, we are the largest provider of child care services in Middlesex County with 12 child care centers and 13 day camps. The Y also manages 4 outdoor community pools in Fords, Port Reading, North Edison and South Edison.

The Y is a volunteer driven charity with over 1,000 volunteers helping serve over 35,000 of your friends and neighbors.

Lets celebrate our success together. Join the Y family.
