On May 4, 2016 we hosted our Annual Dinner at the Pines Manor of Edison. The videos below are testimonials of John Malinowski Youth Employee Award winners. These employees demonstrate outstanding job performance and initiative, often going above and beyond the basic requirements of their position to get the job done, have a strong commitment to the YMCA, and exemplify the YMCA core values of honesty, respect, caring and responsibility. These employees also serve as a positive role model for our youth, act as a team player with an enthusiastic attitude, and enhance the reputation of the YMCA through words and deeds. Anthony Balistreri, Cory Matthew, Matthew Rapach and Kelsey Tonery were honored this year.
John G. Malinowski (1922-2016) was the general director of the Metuchen YMCA (currently the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy), from 1980 until his retirement in 1988. A lifelong supporter of the YMCA movement, “Mr. Mal”, while growing up in NYC, was a member of the West Side YMCA, where he joined the Leaders Club and the YMCA Swim Team. He graduated from the McBurney School, a part of the educational system of the YMCA of Greater New York. In 1970, he joined the Metuchen YMCA as an Extension Director, responsible for developing relationships between the local school systems and the YMCA, which led to his appointment of Branch Director, becoming responsible for the operation of the Metuchen YMCA. Mr. Mal’s final position at the YMCA was General Director. His advice to the next generation is "leave yourself open to meeting new people and making new friends. You never know where your relationships will take you in your career .” Mr. Mal was instrumental in spearheading the community efforts to assist those who found it financially challenging to enjoy a holiday. In retirement Mr. Mal continued to show his passion for the YMCA; most recently documenting the construction and opening of the South Amboy YMCA in 2010 through his photographs. John Malinowski lived the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. The award in his name will ensure his attributes are recognized in the young workforce of the YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy.
