Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy is offering 15 slots, free of charge, in the next session of the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, to people who are at risk to develop Type 2 Diabetes. Residents who are currently enrolled in Medicaid or are eligible for Medicaid may enroll in this year long program and receive a YMCA membership free of charge. The YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program is funded by two grants from the YMCA of the USA, the program is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program and has proved successful at reducing the risk of developing the disease, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The next sessions of the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program will begin in September- one session will be held in South Amboy with another session being held in Edison. Registration for the 15 Free Slots is needed before August 15. For those not receiving Medicaid the program cost may be covered by other health insurance. Participants may also be eligible for YMCA financial assistance.

Participants do not need to be members of the Y to enroll.

Barre Sculpt Fitness Class
Barre us a unique blend of yoga, pilates, and strength training, all centered around traditional ballet barre drills. Within this class you will lengthen and tone your muscles, while improving your posture and balance.

Member price: $80 for 8 week session
Non-member price: $100 for 8 week session
One class drop-in price: $13 (members) and $15 ( non-members)

Small Group Training- Parkinson's
Knockout PD is a 10 week program that will combine various modes of exercise, including non-contact boxing, that have demonstrated success in suppressing and even reversing symptoms associated with Parkinson?s Disease. Participants will perform exercises that help to improve cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance and strength, flexibility, and balance.

Healthy Lifestyle Coaching Program
  • Tired of yo-yo dieting, counting calories or starting over every Monday?
  • Are you looking to get your health on track by making a lifestyle change?
  • Do you want to learn about eating more to lose fat and increase metabolism

Join this 7-week coaching and mentoring Lifestyle Program that will help you develop new, healthy habits, learn about low-glycemic eating, and identify new favorite foods and nutritious recipes.  Make new friends in this empowering group atmosphere and achieve results to last a lifetime.
This Lifestyle program is taught by Jan Grayzel, ACE certified Health Coach. Jan has over 10 years of experience as a health and fitness professional.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. The YMCA and Livestrong have joined together to create LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health.

Participants work with YMCA staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as increased strength, balance, flexibility and endurance and improving confidence and self esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG® AT THE YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

We offer a 12 week program that consists of an exercise program and a support group. This program is free to cancer survivors and will include a 12 week Full Facility membership. Participants are encouraged to bring a support person.

Using a grant from JFK Health the YMCA is currently offering this program FREE TO EDISON RESIDENTS and includes a 1 year YMCA membership. This program  has proved successful at reducing the risk of developing the disease, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

For those not living in Edison the program cost may be covered by other health insurance. Participants may also be eligible for YMCA financial assistance.

Enhance Fitness

Enhance Fitness is an evidence-based group exercise program for older adults that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active throughout their life. Each class session includes cardiovascular, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises and the fostering of strong social relationships between participants. Low-intensity physical activity has been proven to reduce pain, help with weight control, improve functioning and elevate mood. Class meets three times per week for 60 minutes. In each class, a trained YMCA Enhance Fitness Instructor will provide exercises to improve cardiovascular health, strength and flexibility.
