World Service
Local Roots, Global Reach
Did you know the YMCA is at work in 125 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, the Middle East and North America? Locally governed and managed, Ys serve people of all faiths, races, abilities, ages and incomes.
The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge and South Amboy, and more than 230 other
Y Associations across the United States, maintain relationships with Y’s from other countries.
The Metuchen Branch Y has a formal partnership with the YMCA of Grand Bahama Island (Freeport, Bahamas). In addition to financial support, Metuchen Branch is involved with staff exchanges, program development and increased international understanding.
Members of the Edison Branch Y can look forward to exchange programs with fellow members of the Bombay Y in Mumbai, India--thanks to a international partnership initiated by Y Board member Dinesh Karnani in June of 2009.
Membership at the Edison Branch Y is over 60% South Asian, so it made sense to try to collaborate with a Y in India to offer an international experience for everyone. It is our hope to work together on service projects, offer temporary reciprocal "visiting" memberships, and communicate through pen-pal correspondence for cultural enrichment. In the future, we may also be able to cross-train staff and even offer programs together! A visit to the Bombay Y occurred in early November, 2011. Exciting plans for future collaboration are in the works. The partnership with the Bombay Y affirms that the Edison Branch Y belongs to the community!
The International Committee of The YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy is composed of staff and volunteers committed to furthering local awareness and building stronger international relationships with our partner Y's.
