The Y offers a variety of skills and training courses for adults and teens starting at 15 years old.

Metuchen YMCA

Lifeguard Certification (Age 15+)
  • Lifeguard Certification (Age 15+)

    Minimum age: 15 years old

    Swim 300 yards continuously

    Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs

    Complete the following timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:

    -Starting in the water, swim 20 yards

    -Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object

    -Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point

    -Exit the water without using a ladder or steps

Lifeguard Certification (Ages 15+)
  • Lifeguard Certification

    American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Class

    Participants completing this course will be certified in Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED Training. Call the South Amboy YMCA to reserve your spot, members are $300  and non-Members are $350. If hired by the YMCA, after 6 months of employment 50% of the class will be refunded. Class fees include the costs of course materials such as books, pocket masks, and certification cards. All materials are distributed on the first day of the class.

    • Must be 15 years old by the last day of class
    • Must complete pre-test the Wednesday prior to the class at 7 pm
    • Must have a ride to the Metuchen YMCA for deep water portion on last day of the class 1pm-5pm.
    • First day of classs will be from 6-9pm, then 9-5pm the last two. 

    Our goal as instructors is to help students successfully complete their certification goals, students are sometimes not able to adequately complete the stated requirements for the course. Payment of the course fee and participation in class does not guarantee certification; students must successfully complete all course objectives in order to be certified.
