  • Computer Gaming Instructor: Scratch, Lego Robotics, Mindstorms Robotics

    Inspire our youth by sharing your passion for computing. We are actively hiring coding and programming Instructors for Scratch and Lego Robotics. Scratch is an educational programming tool developed by the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab.

    Instructors needed for afterschool, Saturday mornings and summer enrichment camps.

    Qualifications

    • Ideal candidate will have a STEM background with an understanding of Creative Computing; applying the concepts of having children learn to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically as they work with Scratch.

  • Lifeguard

    Qualifications:

    • Must have current Lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Certification
    • Prior lifeguard experience
    • Willing to be outdoors for prolonged periods
    • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age

    Responsibilities include:

    • Arrive at designated time and dressed in appropriate aquatic attire
    • Perform safety checks of equipment, including first aid kits, phones, rescue tubes, pool equipment. 
    • Enforce all pool rules in a firm, but tactful manner
    • Work as part of the aquatic guarding team in an effective and efficient fashion to ensure the overall safety of the pool and pool area
    • Scan according to proper procedures and guard from designated areas and guard chairs
    • Interact with pool members and guests in a member friendly manner

  • Gymnastics Instructor

    The South Amboy YMCA is looking for a reliable and highly motivated Gymnastics Instructor to work with children ages 5 to 12. Applicant must exhibit a pleasant and cheerful attitude at all times, engaging children of different skill levels.

    Essential Functions:

    • Plan and instruct classes as assigned.
    • Arrive prior to class start time to ensure all equipment and materials are set up to standard.

  • Lifeguards

    This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures

    Essential Functions:

    • Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
    • Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
    • Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants and other staff.
    • Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code.
    • Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
    • Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
    • Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
    • Attends all staff meetings and in-service training.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:

    • Minimum age of 18.
    • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and LG.
    • Current YMCA, American Red Cross Lifeguard, or equivalent.
    • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
    • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards

    The School Age Child Care Counselor will provide guidance, mentoring and coaching for all children in the After School Care Program while ensuring the safety and well-being for the children in the Program.

  • Swim Instructor
    The YMCA of MEWSA is offering a great opportunity to join a passionate and driven Aquatic Department. The Swim Instructor will assure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all class participants in his/her class.  The Instructor is responsible for teaching the strokes by instructing, demonstrating, and correcting the individual so they may learn to the best of their ability.  Swim instructors should make and keep swimming a fun activity, while bearing in mind that safety can never be compromised and the swim instruction guidelines must be adhered to.

    Qualifications:

    • To teach in a professional, courteous manner, be attentive to all participants, eliminate unsafe practices and physical hazards.
    • Exhibit respect for the pool rules, obeying them at all times.
    • Positive and friendly attitude.
    • Properly dresses in a swim suit at all times.
    • Arrive at least 10 minutes prior to shift start time and be on deck 5 minutes prior to class time.
    • Instructor must make sure classes start on time and end on time, adjusting of class time is not the acceptable or the decision of the instructor.
    • Take accurate attendance at the beginning of each class.
    • Make every effort to know each child's name by third class.
    • Be prepared to teach and know the subject of your instruction.

Part Time Positions
  • Certified Lifeguard

    POSITION SUMMARY:

     

    Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director/Assistant Aquatic Director, the head guard will be responsible for the safety of all members during the hours of the pool operation.  The head guard will also be responsible for the total operation of the pool in the absence of the Aquatic Director/Assistant Aquatic Director or Deck Supervisor and ensure staff are actively guarding.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

     

    1. Arrive at work on time and prepared.
    2. Perform safety checks of equipment, including first aid kit, phones, rescue tubes, pool equipment.
    3. Enforce all pool rules in a firm, but tactful manner.
    4. Work with lifeguards as a team player, giving direction and displaying leadership qualities, ensuring all guards are actively scanning and patrolling their assigned sections.  Provide breaks for guards as needed and scheduled ensure the pool is always in guarding ratio.
    1. Ensure safety of members and patrons and prevent injuries by actively guarding and supervising of pools by active scanning and patrolling.
    2. Ensure your personal protective (rescue breather, gloves, fanny pack) is all in good working order and accessible per safety standards as well as ensuring all guards on deck have their PPE in order.
    3. Have a complete understanding of, and be familiar with all emergency procedures, buzzers, buttons and YMCA standards, operations and protocols.
    4. Ensure security of pool when leaving the pool area – no pool is ever left unguarded for any reason, at any time.Pool and pool deck must be vacated by all when guard must leave pool area.
    5. React immediately to signs of individuals in distress.
    6. Administer first aid to victims using OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Universal PrecautionsProvide immediate are to sustains life until EMS arrives.
    7. Complete all incident and save reports at time of incident, including all pertinent information.Reports must be legible and state the facts as witnessed by the guard.
    8. Maintain all aquatic standards and rules.Ensure no distractions or interference with the ability to hear or see signs of distress.
    9. Adherence to all bathing code regulations, standards and safety measures.
    10. Must keep all certifications current and have the ability to provide documentation of certifications at all times when requested.
    11. Wear proper YMCA professional appearance policy attire as well as have all proper safety equipment (whistle, tube, fanny pack, etc) on persons at all time.
    12. Participate as part of the Aquatic Team in providing a safe and enjoyable, member friendly environment.
    13. Respect coworkers by arriving on time and in accordance with scheduled hours.
    14. Communicate all pool rules and policies in a friendly but firm manner.Ultimately the pool is the lifeguards responsibility and the overall operation of the pool, when turned over to a Lead Guard is the Lead Guards responsibility.
    1. Interact with pool members and guests in a member friendly manner.  Address concerns when possible; refer to Aquatic Director/Assistant Aquatic Director when necessary.
    2. Monitor and assist in cleanliness of pool and pool deck.
    3. Prepare necessary reports when needed.
    4. Attend mandatory meeting as required.
    5. Keep the Aquatic Director and Assistant Aquatic Director apprised of activities, situations or problems in the pool area.

     

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Current lifesavings, First-Aid, CRP/AED and Oxygen certification.
    • Must be 18 years of age with a minimum of 2 years of active guarding experience.
    • Mature and responsible who can react without hesitation in a professional manner and assume the point role in the event of emergency.
    • Ability to enforce all pool rules fairly, effectively in a positive manner.
    • Ability to use water testing kit and be part of the team accurately reflecting results.
    • Ability to see and hear individuals and alarms in pool/pool area
    • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
    • Must have sound knowledge of the use of a backboard and cervical collar.
    • He/She needs to be able to supervise other individuals in a firm, but caring and empathetic manner.

    PHYSICAL REQURIEMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

     

    Sufficient strength and skill technique to control and rescue struggling adult swimmers, lifting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, pulling, pushing, concentration, attention and focus to one area for extended periods of time, warm weather outdoor work, average to warm in-door and out-door pool heat and humidity.

  • Lifeguard

     Job Description

    Under the supervision and guidance of the Director, the Maintenance staff member will, perform “hands-on” duties that will support the overall cleanliness, upkeep and safety of the branch or center.  He or she will also assist with maintenance projects deemed appropriate by the Director.

     

     

    Qualifications

    • ŸHigh School or equivalency
    • ŸMinimum 2 years related experience – cleaning, landscaping, mechanical etc.

    • ŸReport any findings of additional repairs or work needed immediately to the Director.
    • ŸAttend all mandatory meetings.

    • ŸAccurately reflect hours worked utilizing the time recording method assigned.

  • Swim Instructor

    Under the direction of the Aquatic Director/Assistant Aquatic Director or assigned supervisor, the Swim Instructor will assure the safety, well-being and enjoyment of all class participants in his/her class.  The Instructor is responsible for teaching the strokes by instructing, demonstrating, and correcting the individual so they may learn to the best of their ability.  Swim instructors should make and keep swimming a fun activity, while bearing in mind that safety can never be compromised and the swim instruction guidelines must be adhered to.

    Qualifications:

    • Must have knowledge & skills of all 4 strokes.
